 THE CARA BROWN RINGETTE SCHOLARSHIP

Cara Brown, M.A.

This scholarship is intended to ease the financial hardship students encounter when trying to balance their commitments as athletes and as students.  If it means that you continue to play ringette, then I will have accomplished my mission.

While I would not trade my university education for anything, I am comforted at having no regrets in perhaps trading off a few points on my GPA to go to the national championships (which invariably collide with final exams).  I knew it then and persisted.

You can always upgrade that GPA or resume university studies after your athlete days are over.  You can't always perform at the elite level with the grace under pressure your youth will grant you - so seize both now!

CARA LANE BROWN, M.A. (Economics and Law)

What can a ringette player aspire to after winning gold at the Canadian Ringette Championships?  To follow Cara Brown's example, she can go on to participate in a total of seventeen national championships from 1980 to 1998, to be named to the all-star team on ten occasions, to experience three World Ringette Championships (winning gold twice), and to play in the 1998 International Summit Series against Finland.  This is what Cara has done in her spare time.  Cara's drive, commitment to excellence and success is not limited to an outstanding twenty-seven-year AA ringette career in Ontario and Alberta.  She graduated with a Master of Arts degree in economics at the age of twenty-one and spent more than seven years as a senior economic consultant and expert witness.  Then, in 1991 Cara established her own economic consulting firm, Brown Economic Consulting Inc. (BEC).  Headquartered in Calgary with offices in Atlantic Canada and British Columbia, BEC Inc. is a forensic economic consulting firm specializing in the calculation of economic damages in civil litigation cases such as personal injury, wrongful death, sexual assault, wrongful confinement and wrongful imprisonment.  Her firm quantified damages for the Milgaard family.

Cara authored a first-of-its kind economics loose-leaf book in 2000 entitled Damages: Estimating Pecuniary Loss, published by Canada Law Book.  This serves as a practical guide in civil litigation cases for both new and experienced lawyers and is based on her more than 120 court appearances as an expert witness.  Cara initiated, designed and taught Women, Work and the Economy, an undergraduate course at the University of Calgary (1996-99), as well as being a sessional instructor and guest lecturer at the University for other undergraduate economics and law courses.  She has published more than twenty articles.  Her CV and biography can be found at www.browneconomic.com>Our Team>Cara Brown.  She is listed in the 2000 edition of Who's Who of Canadian Sport, and was selected for the Ringette Canada Hall of Fame in 2002 in the 'Athlete' category.  Cara was profiled in the Royal Bank’s “Champions” newsletter (“Breakthroughs and Resources for Women Entrepreneurs”) in their fall/winter 2004 Issue 2 Volume 7.

Cara has also been blessed in her personal life, sharing the past 18 years with her lovely longtime partner, Maureen; and enjoying many special friendships within the ringette community and through her work experiences.

Ringette Canada is proud to continue its long association with Cara Brown through this scholarship award program.
