Peter Maik’s contributions to the sport of ringette on a national basis are very extensive as a coach, referee, officiating committee member, national championship supervisor and evaluator. Peter was also very active provincially and locally as a referee-in-chief, coach, instructor, regional supervisor of officials, fundraiser and local association builder/director. As a coach, Peter’s style, strategies and tactics were studied by all and emulated by many as he pioneered several unique offensive and defensive systems. As a devoted student of sport and accomplished junior and varsity athlete himself, Peter always focused on the value of sport and its contribution to the important character development of young people. With over 15 years of community coaching, Peter’s coaching style always included reference to life lessons that ringette could offer the athletes.
When asked what the induction meant to him, Peter commented, “I could rhyme off a number of clichés and talk about how proud and honoured I am to be inducted into the Hall of Fame – which I am, but really this induction has given me the opportunity to reflect and think about the many people who have provided me with the opportunities in my life and quite frankly it makes me well up with tears because I have so many great memories. It truly is an honour.”
