2023 World Ringette Championships – Day 1
Calgary, Alberta – October 30th, 2023 – The World Ringette Championships kicked off today WinSport in Calgary.
After a unique schedule seeing the WRC take place in back-to-back years, the 2023 edition of the World Ringette Championships starts with three games highlighting the opening-day schedule. Twenty-six games will be played at WinSport in Calgary from 30th October to 4th November 2023.
The event kicked off in the President’s pool with a marquee matchup when Sweden faced the Czech Republic. It was a very even match with both teams showing some great passing play. In the end it was Sweden who triumphed by a score of 7 – 6, with #20 Meri Ruuska putting an impressive 5 goals past the Czech netminder.
The Czech Republic were back in action again against the USA in their second match of the tournament. The USA came out very strong and took an early 8-0 lead. The Czech’s battled back and scored 3 goals of their own but ultimately it wasn’t enough against a strong US side. The USA won the game by a score of 11-3, with their 11 goals impressively coming from 10 different players. Despite their loss the Czech goalie, Katerina Dvoráková, made an incredible 54 saves and was the game’s MVP.
Canada and Finland faced off in their first exhibition match. Number 7, Emmi Juusela scored 2 to give Finland an early lead. Finland was up by a score of 4-0 before #97 Laurence Lacombe found a response from a Manon Vautour and Regan Meier assist. Lacombe and Vautour combined again, this time it was Vautour with the point. But Canada couldn’t contain the Finns as they went to on put 3 more points on the board and win the game by a score of 7-2.
