Canadian Ringette Championships – Day 6 Finals

Calgary, Alberta – April 9, 2022 Champions were crowned and all-stars were named tonight at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Canadian Ringette Championships in Calgary Alberta.

The stands were packed, and the energy was high as the skates hit the ice our first game of this championship day. Team Québec won a close match-up against Team Prince Edward Island, 3-2 to take the gold medal in the consolation final.  Moving on to the championship round, the Calgary SURGE beat Sherwood Park Power 5-1 to take the U16 bronze medal.  The U16 gold medal match was an absolute thriller, with some excellent end-to-end play, by the time the final whistle blew, team Alberta took the gold medal over Team New Brunswick by a score of 7-6.

The Canadian ringette championships are designed to crown champions in the U16, U19 and National Ringette League (19+) divisions; to provide fun, friendship and fitness to participating players; and to encourage ringette across Canada.

The U19s were on ice next, starting with the consolation final.  Team Ontario took the U19 consolation gold, beating out Team British Columbia by a score of 5-2.  Over to the championship round where the bronze medal match saw to Alberta teams going head-to-head. Team Alberta won out, defeating Sherwood Park by a score of 8-2 to take the bronze medal. The gold medal game was another electrifying match up featuring the Calgary Raid and the St. Albert Mission.  When the curtain fell, the Mission took gold medal 5-4 and the Raid had to settle for the silver.

The National Ringette League was last up on the docket.  The bronze medal went home with the Cambridge Turbos as they downed the Atlantic Attack 6-2. The gold medal match was another all-Alberta affair with the Calgary RATH looking to continue their winning streak against the Edmonton WAM!  The game was exhilarating, and the Calgary RATH pulled off an amazing feat, going undefeated for the entire NRL season, and capping it all off with a gold medal win downing the WAM! 5-1.

It was a wonderful week of Ringette in Calgary. While the championships hope to stimulate ringette participation in Canada, they also carry the important goal of promoting excellence in competitive ringette – team excellence and individual excellence. Criteria for being awarded a performance award include: general excellence, specialized skills in her position, contribution to team success, capacity for fair play, and sportsmanship.

Agnes Jacks True Sport awards were presented in each division. Winners included the Calgary Surge in the U16 division, Team Alberta (Calgary Raid) in the U19 division and Calgary RATH in the National Ringette League division.
