Hometown crowd fills the stands to cheer on ringette at the 2019 Canada Winter Games

Red Deer, Alberta – February 18, 2019 – It was another day of over capacity crowds at the ringette competition at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, with the biggest crowd showing up for the hometown favorite, Team Alberta.

Alberta suffered a tough opening day loss to Nova Scotia on Saturday, but came out today and posted a 6-4 win over New Brunswick. Edmonton’s Torrie Shennan posted two goals in the win and commented on how her team prepared for today’s game. “Yesterday we had a team meeting and we left everything up till that point behind. Today was a new day and we were very excited and very ready.”

Over an hour before the Alberta/New Brunswick game, the lobby was completely filled with cheering fans hoping to get one of the coveted seats available for the game. Shennan also commented on what the hometown support meant to the team. “To have all the support was an extra piece of the puzzle. Our whole team believes in each other, but to know that our fans believe in us and have invested in us, means a lot. It’s the privilege of playing in Alberta.”

Earlier in the day, Saskatchewan defeated Prince Edward Island 9-2. Saskatoon’s Keala Fleury posted a hat trick, while Regina’s Chandria Yang picked up a pair and an assist in the game.

Quebec remained undefeated after downing British Columbia 7-3 in the third game of the day. Gatineau’s Julie Vandal and Montreal’s Isabella Larocque both picked up pairs in the game.

In the last game of the day, Ontario beat Prince Edward Island 12-2 to also remain undefeated. Guelph’s Claire Wyville picked up four goals and two assists in the game.
