U16 and U19 teams advance to next round, while round-robin play continues in National Ringette League division
Leduc, Alberta – March 30, 2017 – The end of day four at the 2017 Freson Bros. Canadian ringette championships in Leduc saw teams advance to the championship and consolation rounds in the U16 and U19 divisions, while round-robin play continues tomorrow in the National Ringette League (NRL) division.
In the U16 division, Central Alberta Sting shut out Manitoba Magic 5-0 to finish round-robin play undefeated and move directly to a quarterfinal game tomorrow. They will meet BLL (QC), who suffered their first loss of the tournament when they were downed 7-3 by the Cambridge Turbos. BLL then went on to defeat Manitoba (BVRA Angels) 5-0 to secure their spot in the quarterfinals. Other quarterfinal match-ups tomorrow will include New Brunswick against Ontario (Nepean), Québec (Laurentides) versus Alberta (Calgary PACE), and Cambridge Turbos (ON) against Saskatchewan (Saskatoon Selects). Competition in the consolation round will also take place tomorrow.
Round-robin play concluded in the U19 division today, with teams now moving on to the quarterfinals in both the championship and consolation rounds. Manitoba (BVRA Angels) beat Alberta (Calgary) 7-6 in overtime and posted an 8-1 win over British Columbia (TORL Force) to end round-robin play undefeated. They will play Nova Scotia in tomorrow’s quarterfinal. Other quarterfinal match-ups tomorrow include Rive-Sud (QC) against Richmond Hill (ON), Alberta (Calgary) versus Ontario (Guelph), and St. Albert Mission (AB) and Edmonton Elite.
In the NRL division, Atlantic Attack beat Calgary RATH 5-3 and Cambridge Turbos downed Edmonton WAM! 8-7. This puts the Attack and Cambridge tied with a 5-1 record going into the final day of round-robin play. Waterloo Wildfire posted a 5-1 win over Edmonton Black Gold Rush and Richmond Hill Lightning downed Ottawa Ice 8-4, putting them both at a 4-2 record. This sets the stage for an exciting end to round-robin play tomorrow.
Games are taking place at the Leduc Recreation Centre, the Ken Nichol Regional Recreation Centre in Beaumont, and the Dale Fisher Arena in Devon. The finals will be held at the Leduc Recreation Centre. Competition continues all week and finals in all three divisions take place on Saturday, April 1 (U16 at 9:30 MDT, U19 at 11:30 MDT and NRL at 13:30 MDT). All-stars and the NRL Annual Awards will be announced at the closing award ceremony on Saturday night.
